SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
September 15, 2014
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk. Guests: Aashmi Bhatnagar, Second Grade, Pleasant Valley School, 2014 Poster Contest Winner, and her family
MINUTES:
Motion: Anderson/Anthony: Move to accept the minutes of June 16, as printed. Carried.
At this time, the agenda was suspended (Motion: Plummer/Anderson) to introduce Aashmi Bhatnagar. A presentation of her certificate and gift card as winner of the 2014 poster contest was made. The meeting resumed after the presentation/congratulations.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
Budget for 2014-2015 program year presented.
CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
- A four year listing of essay and poster topics was presented. Members asked to bring for suggestions for 2015 contest to next meeting.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson
- Firework contract signed for 2015; deposit made. Fireworks will be set off more slowly next year.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser (no report needed at this time)
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony: Peter Anthony (no report needed at this time)
Veterans Day Parade: Kent Carlson
- All veterans’ groups invited. DAV and AL have responded yes. Awaiting definitive response from VFW and VVA
- Members welcome to join SW if respective groups unable to march
Veterans Day Ceremony: Kent Carlson
- Checklists being kept for the good of the committee
- Notebooks asked of each sub-committee delineating work, capturing process and recording successes
- Three bricks to be placed before 2014 ceremony
Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr.
- TEMS: Friday, 11/15, same format of 2013 (speaking to 8th grade classrooms)
- Possible interviews by students
- Volunteers needed for ½ day
- SWHS: Tuesday, 11/11, same format of 2013 (ceremony outside; speaking in classrooms)
- Contact to be made with American Legion and Chief Reed for volunteers
- Elementary Schools: Programs should be held; volunteers will be needed
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (December 13, 2014)
- Letters out; money received to date for 400 wreaths
- $15/wreath; 1,000 wreath goal
- 12/8: State Capitol ceremony
Wall Behind the Monument: Art Sladyk
- Grants still being sought
- Art to speak before the Chamber of Commerce
- Pro-bono excavation and site work being sought through various contractors
- Current list of veterans living in South Windsor being obtained
- Media blitz sought and research into pro-bono printing
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund (no report needed at this time)
OLD BUSINESS:
- Wapping Cemetery Association rules being sought, along with attempts to contact members
- Cross-training among members needed to ensure continuity of Commission work, as members leave Commission and new members appointed (postponed to next meeting)
NEW BUSINESS: (none at this time)
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
- Art thanked for his continual work on the Wall Behind the Monument
- Art speaking to Rotary on 10/8 regarding WAA
- Discussion held on Medal of Honor recipient that was 48 years in the making
The next meeting will be held Monday, October 20, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
